2011 JUNIOR AND INTERMEDIATE COMPETITION
RULES AND REGULATIONS
ELIGIBILITY
1. The 2011 Virginia Waring International Piano Competition for the Junior Division is open to pianists of any nationality born after March 27, 1998.
The 2011 Virginia Waring International Piano Competition for the Intermediate Division is open to pianists of any nationality born between March 27, 1993 and March 26, 1998.
2. Previous first prize winners of the Junior and Intermediate Divisions of the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition are not eligible to enter the same division.
3. Admission to the Competition will be granted by a distinguished selection committee to approximately twenty (20) applicants in each Division on the basis of audition CDs.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
1. The 2011 Virginia Waring International Piano Competition will be held from March 27 to April 3, 2011. All events from March 27 to April 2 will take place on the California State University, San Bernardino – Palm Desert Campus in the Indian Wells Theater. Master Classes will take place there as well on April 2, 2011. Concerto finals with orchestra will be held on April 3 at the McCallum Theatre, Palm Desert.
2. Contestants are financially responsible for their travel to and from Palm Desert.
3. Competitors must arrive by Friday, March 25, 2011. Competitors should plan to stay for the duration of the competition and must not have any other commitments during this time.
4. In some cases, foreign competitors will need visas. Applicants should consult the nearest American Embassy or Consulate.
5. All contestants must give credit for all awards won in the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition in all future publicity.
6. The competition reserves the right, without payment of fees, to record and distribute recordings for media and other purposes, including the Internet, and to televise, broadcast, film, record, videotape, photograph or live stream all stages of the competition, all prize performances and concerts.
7. By applying to the competition, applicants agree to abide by all the rules and regulations of the VWIPC competition.
8. The Competition reserves the right to make necessary changes as circumstances dictate.
HOUSING/TRANSPORT/PRACTICE
1. Each contestant will be offered host-family lodging, local transportation and reasonable access to a practice piano.
2. Contestants who decline host-family housing will be responsible for their own lodging and transportation, with limited piano practice time.
RULES FOR APPLICATION
1. The Application Deadline for the 2011 Junior and Intermediate Competition is October 15, 2010.
2. The Application Form may be found on-line at www.vwipc.org. The application and .jpg photo may be submitted electronically.
3. All applications must be electronically prepared or typed; hand-written applications will not be processed.
4. KEEP COPIES OF ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS. Acknowledgment of your application will be sent to you by email. If you do not hear from us within ten working days, contact us immediately.
5. Required Supporting Materials to be mailed are:
• Proof of age (photocopy of birth certificate or passport) – DO NOT SEND ORIGINALS
• A non-refundable application fee.
• A preliminary audition CD, accompanied by a list of the included repertoire
• List of competition repertoire to be performed on site
• Biographical material
• Two recent 5x7 (13x18cm) head shots with name lightly printed in block letters on reverse side, plus a .jpg photo on a CD or sent by email
• Teacher information & signature
• Parent information & signature
6. The required supporting materials and fee payment must be received in the VWIPC office by October 15, 2010 at the following address:

PRELIMINARY AUDITION CD
1. No later than October 15, 2010, all applicants must submit a CD with their completed application.
2. The audition CD for all divisions, including master classes, must include a minimum of 15 minutes of diverse solo repertoire including one etude that demonstrates the pianist’s technical dexterity. The etude must be chosen from Etudes by Chopin, Liszt, MacDowell, Moszkowski, or Scriabin.
3. Applicants may choose preliminary audition repertoire different from the works they plan to perform on site.
4. Each applicant should listen to his or her CD to confirm its quality and completeness, and that it is compatible with North American CD players. (VCD & CD-Rom or DVD formats are not compatible)
5. Applicants will be known to the screening judges by an assigned number only.
6. All contestants will be chosen based exclusively on the audition CD, without regard to prior awards, education, age, nationality or gender.
REPERTOIRE & COMPETITION REQUIREMENTS
JUNIOR SOLO: 30 minutes of repertoire from diverse styles and eras (see 1. below)
JUNIOR SOLO & CONCERTO: Solo repertoire plus a complete concerto to be chosen from the following:
• Beethoven, Concerto no. 2 in B flat Major
• Mozart, Concerto in G Major, K. 453
• Shostakovich, Concerto no. 2 in F Major, op. 102
JUNIOR MASTER CLASS: Any work originally written for solo piano.
INTERMEDIATE SOLO: 45 minutes of repertoire from diverse styles and eras (see 1. below)
INTERMEDIATE SOLO & CONCERTO: Solo repertoire plus a complete concerto to be chosen from the following:
• Chopin, Concerto no. 1 in e minor
• Mozart, Concerto in d minor, K. 466
• Saint-Saës, Concerto no. 2 in g minor, op. 22
INTERMEDIATE MASTER CLASS: Any work originally written for solo piano.
1. Competitors should select solo repertoire from each of the following categories:
• 18th Century Baroque and Classical Styles as represented by Bach, Scarlatti, Haydn, Mozart and their contemporaries
• 19th Century Romantic or Impressionistic Styles as represented by Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Brahms, Debussy, Ravel or their contemporaries.
• 20th Century and beyond – works of a contemporary style
2. Once an applicant has been accepted into the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition, he or she must compete in all entered competitions. (For example, a contestant who enters both solo and concerto competitions may not cancel the concerto later).
3. NO REPERTOIRE CHANGES ARE ALLOWED. Please consider your submitted repertoire thoroughly.
4. Upon their acceptance, each competitor will be sent a copy of the required solo piece for their division. This will be a work written especially for the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition by composer/pianist John Bayless. These works will be performed by all semi-finalists.
5. Adjudicators may request any portion of the music and terminate a contestant’s round at any time. Decision of the adjudicators is final.
6. All winners must be present and prepared to play at the appropriate winners’ concerts.
7. All fees must be paid in US dollars. Payment may be made by:
• A check on a US bank many payable to VWIPC
• Credit card, using Master Card or Visa
• Direct wire transfer
• Cashier’s check or money order made payable to VWIPC

NOTIFICATION
Applicants will be notified of their admission to the competitions and master classes beginning December 15, 2010.
COMPETITION REGULATIONS
1. All works must be performed from memory and must be prepared in their entirety. Adjudicators may request only portions of some works if the repertoire exceeds the time limits.
2. Once submitted with the application, competition repertoire may not be changed.
3. Each contestant must identify the repertoire to be performed within the following Preliminary Round time limits:
• Junior Solo: 15 minutes
• Junior Concerto: 15 minutes
• Intermediate Solo: 20 minutes
• Intermediate Concerto: 20 minutes
• Cuts may be made during the Preliminary Round.
4. Preliminary and semi-final concerto rounds will be with Second Piano. Contestants must use official Competition accompanists. The VWIPC will arrange appropriate rehearsal time.
5. The finalists in both Junior and Intermediate Concerto events are required to perform their entire concerti with orchestra.
6. One published score of each work to be performed must be provided for adjudicators.
7. All announced prizes will be awarded. Additional performance awards may be announced at the conclusion of the competition. Winners are expected to honor all commitments resulting from their prizes.
8. All decisions of the jury will be final. Written comments from the adjudicators will be mailed, following the competition, to all contestants’ teachers.
9. All master classes and all rounds of the competition will be open to the public.
