2013 Senior Competition Rules & Regulations

ELIGIBILITY:  

  1. Open to pianists of any nationality born between March 25, 1977 and March 25, 1995
  2. Not open to previous first place winners of the Senior Division of the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition or the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition
  3. Twenty-five (25) applicants will be admitted to the Competition based on audition CDs heard by a distinguished selection committee.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  1. The 2013 Competition will be held in Palm Desert, California from March 24 through April 1, 2013.  The Palm Desert Campus of California State University, San Bernardino will be the venue for Competition Rounds and Master Classes from March 24 through March 30.  Master Classes with the jury will take place on Saturday, March 30. The Concerto Finals with Orchestra will be held in the McCallum Theatre, Palm Desert on April 1, 2013.
  2. Contestants are financially responsible for their travel to and from Palm Desert.
  3. All competitors must arrive by Sunday March 24, 2013. Competitors should plan to stay for the entire competition. They must not have any other professional commitments during this time.
  4. All applicants invited to the Competition are responsible for their own travel documents: visas, passports, etc. Please ask the nearest US Embassy or US Consulate for required documents to enter the United States. It may take several  weeks to obtain the proper documents.
  5. All contestants must give credit in all future publicity for all awards won in the 2013 Virginia Waring International Piano Competition.
  6. The Competition reserves the right, without payment of fees, to record and distribute recordings for media and other purposes, including the Internet, and to televise, broadcast, film, record, videotape, photograph or stream live all stages of the Competition, all prize performances and concerts.
  7. By applying to the Competition, applicants agree to abide by all the rules and regulations of the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition.
  8. The Competition reserves the right to make necessary changes as circumstances dictate.

HOUSING / TRANSPORTATION:

  1. Each contestant will be offered host-family lodging, local transportation and reasonable access to a practice piano.
  2. Housing will be provided free of charge to each accepted contestant for the duration of the Competition.
  3. Contestants who decline host-family housing will be responsible for their own lodging and local transportation, with possibly limited piano practice time.

RULES FOR APPLICATION:

  3. All required supporting materials and application fees must be received by the VWIPC, 73-710 Fred Waring Dr. # 201, Palm Desert, CA 92260 USA on or before October 15, 2012.
  4. All applications must be electronically prepared or typed; hand-written applications will be disqualified.
  5. KEEP COPIES OF ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS. You will receive an automatic email confirming your application once it is submitted online.
  6. Required Supporting Materials are:
    1. Proof of age (photo copy of birth certificate or passport)
    2. If US Citizen or Resident, copy of US Social Security Card
    3. A Non-Refundable application fee of US $200 (if not previously paid on line)
    4. An audition CD accompanied by a list of the included repertoire (see specifics below)
    5. Recent head shot photo, if not previously sent by email. Please have in a JPEG or Tiff on a CD.

PRELIMINARY AUDITION CD:

  1. Applicants may choose preliminary audition repertoire different from the works they plan to perform during the Competition.
  2. The audition CD must have at least 50 (fifty) minutes of diverse solo repertoire including.
    1. One etude that demonstrates the applicant's technical dexterity.  The etude must be chosen from the Etudes of Chopin, Debussy, Ligeti, Liszt, Rachmaninoff or Scriabin.
    2. Preliminary audition solo repertoire must be chosen from at least three of the following categories:
      1. Baroque
      2. Classical Sonata (Complete)
      3. Major Romantic Work or Group
      4. French or Spanish Impressionism
      5. Works written after 1920
  3. NOTE:  The Audition CD is the Deciding Factor on Acceptance into the Competition!
    1. The audition CD must be an audio CD, recorded in an audio file (not a computer file)
    2. The audition CD must be formatted for audio playback only on a CD player
    3. If your CD is formatted for CD-Rom or VCD, the judges will not be able to listen to it, and you will be disqualified.
    4. Each piece of repertoire on the audition CD needs a separate track number
  4. Each applicant should listen to his or her CD on an audio CD Player (not a computer) to confirm its quality and completeness.
  5. Applicants will be known to the screening judges by an assigned number only. All selections will be made without regard to prior awards, education, age, nationality, gender or teacher.
REPERTOIRE & COMPETITION REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Once accepted into the Competition, the applicant must be prepared to compete in all categories of the Competition. Contestants who withdraw at any time during the Competition will forfeit all prizes and awards.
  2. NO REPERTOIRE CHANGES ARE ALLOWED Please choose your repertoire carefully BEFORE your submit your application.
  3. Judges will know each competitor ONLY by a randomly selected number.

SOLO REPERTOIRE:

Each contestant must prepare a 75 (seventy-five) minute solo program:

  • You must include works from at least 3 (three) categories, including those categories not on your audition CD
  • All periods of repertoire must be presented, whether on the CD or in the solo program.
  • Particular repertoire should be identified for each round of the solo competition.
  • Repertoire may be repeated ONLY in the Final Round.

CHAMBER MUSIC: Each contestant must prepare the first movement of ONE Piano Trio, chosen from the following:

  1. Beethoven, Piano Trio in B flat, opus 97, "Archduke"
    Brahms, Piano Trio in B major, opus 8
    Ravel, Piano Trio in a minor
ERNST KRENEK:

 Each contestant must prepare ONE complete sonata by Ernst Krenek, to be chosen from the following ( you may use sheet music):

Sonata no. 3, opus 92, no. 4
Sonata no. 4, opus 114
Sonata no 5, opus 121

CONCERTO REPERTOIRE: Each contestant must prepare ONE complete concerto, to be chosen from the following:

Beethoven Concerto # 4 in G major
Chopin Concerto # 1 in e minor
Gershwin Concerto in F
Grieg Concerto in a minor
Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
MISCELLANEOUS:
  1. Judges may start or stop any portion of the music at any time.
  2. All solos and concerti must be performed by memory and must be prepared in their entirety. (The Krenek Sonatas may be performed with sheet music).
  3. Judges may request only portions of some works if the repertoire exceeds the time limits.
  4. Contestants must use official Competition accompanists. Appropriate rehearsal time will be arranged by the VWIPC.
  5. One published score of each work to be performed must be provided for judges. No photocopies are allowed. The scores will be returned to the contestant after the round.
  6. All decisions of the Jury will be final. Written comments from judges will be mailed to all contestants within 6 (six) weeks following the Competition.
  7. All rounds of the Competition and master classes will be open to the public.

Solo Round I: All Contestants will perform a 20 minute solo program

Solo Round II - Semi Finals: Approximately 7 (seven) contestants will be selected to compete in the Semi-Final round, performing 45 minute solo programs of different repertoire, including the Ernst Krenek work of their choice.

Solo Round III - Finals: Three (3) finalists will be selected to present 45 minute solo programs. Prizes, including the Krenek Prize, will be awarded.

Chamber Music: Twelve (12) contestants from Solo Round I will be selected to perform the first movement of the Piano Trio of their choice with a professional violinist and cellist. A Chamber Music Prize will be awarded.

Concerto Round I: All contestants will perform the concerto of their choice with second piano accompaniment. Appropriate cuts must be made if the work exceeds 20 minutes.

Concerto Round II - Finals: Three (3) finalists will be selected to perform full concerti with orchestra, with one rehearsal. Prizes will be awarded.

MASTER CLASS: Contestants who perform in Solo Round 1 who do not advance to Solo Round 11 will have the opportunity to perform in a Master Class with one of the adjudicators on Saturday March 30.
